Once upon a time, there hadn’t always been springs or autumns.

There used to only be shining summers and dead winters. For exactly six moons, there would be blizzards that turned lips and fingers blue, gave excuses to huddle in someone else’s bed and press cold toes to warm calves. For exactly six more moons, there would be sweltering sunlight that had trees and flowers pummeling through the surface of the soil and birds swifting through branches and leaves.

But winter always came again, frost and sleet and wind sweeping across the land and killing everything in its path. The grasses died, the trees shriveled up. No one really knew where the animals went, and they were left to their own devices. The only life for as far as the eye would see would be the dancing snow. This is where the legend begins.
